Senate Query Social Housing Bill

A bill to make housing affordable for low income earners has suffered a setback in the senate.

While considering a report of the Senate Committee on Lands and Housing on the bill, the lawmakers queried the source of funding for the proposed scheme and the management of the scheme.

Presenting the report, the Chairman of the Committee, Senator Bukar Ibrahim, said the scheme was aimed at creating “affordable houses” for the low income earners.

Ibrahim also stated that the funds for the implementation of the scheme would be drawn from unclaimed gratuities, unclaimed dividends, excess crude account and ecological fund.
Some senators however observed that the source of funding for the proposed Social Housing Scheme was not sustainable.

They also observed that the agency that would manage the funds and implement the scheme for effective execution was not specified.
The bill was returned to the committee for further legislative work, and no date was given to the committee to conclude their work.
